This fully residential course includes the four-day Contemplative Based Resilience (CBR) training in the context of a restful and restorative winter retreat in Bern, Switzerland. These training retreats are uniquely tailored to humanitarians in the field and have been designed to provide the core support they need, including connection with other humanitarians, restoration within a peaceful environment close to nature and deepened understanding of how to more effectively cope with the impact of aid work.

Where does the course take place?

The training retreat will be held at Landguet Ried, a beautiful retreat centre in Bern, Switzerland, which is easily accessible from Geneva. The venue is surrounded by forests and open fields, providing ample space for relaxation. Basic accommodation is provided, along with hearty and fresh vegetarian food.

What does the course cover?

The course covers the entire CBR curriculum, which is focused on the three themes of Awareness, Balance and Connection. The general themes and topics covered by the training include:

  • The Impact of Field Work
  • The Physiology and Psychology of stress
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Resilience
  • Empathy and Compassion
  • Mindfulness and Meditation practice
  • Mindful Movement practice

What will I gain from this course?

  1. Techniques to understand your own sources of stress, the impact it has on you, and the ability to monitor your reactions to stress and hardship.
  2. An increased understanding of the psychology of basic, cumulative and traumatic stress.
  3. Increased awareness of thoughts, emotions and body reactions, improving emotional regulation and stress management.
  4. Deepened understanding of the role of compassion meditation and body-based techniques to regulate those reactions.
  5. Tools and knowledge to create your own stress management plans and modify them as required.
  6. Practical contemplative-based resilience skills such as meditation, mindful movement, loving-kindness and compassion practices, providing a strong foundation for increased resilience.

The course fee also includes 12 months of access to ongoing CBR support, via the CBR Mobile Appand Monthly Support Circle calls.

Who should attend?

Personal resilience training through CBR is crucial for anyone working in an insecure and chronically stressful environments, whether in the field or at HQ level. This particular training retreat targets international aid workers who seek deep reflection and renewal during their R&R, annual leave or break between contracts.

**PLEASE NOTE: Individuals should have the relevant *visa/passport** allowing them to travel to Switzerland. If participants require a visa this should be managed by their employment organisation*

How much does it cost?

Fee: €1,200 per participant

This is a non-profit programme and the course is therefore run on a cost recovery basis, meaning the fee represents a base-level investment. Since this course is a resilience skills development course, we emphasise the responsibility of organisations to cover the cost of their staff to attend. For organisations wishing to book a number of places, a group discount will be offered. For individuals who cannot be sponsored by their organisation to attend, we can offer slightly reduced rates for participation.

This cost covers course fees, full board accommodation and 12 months of ongoing support. Flights and transportation to be covered separately.
